In August 2010, one of Diane Martin's closest friends lost her daughter to suicide. They began running together in August of subsequent years to honour her memory. A couple of years ago Diane's friend wasn’t able to run. As she ran alone, she started thinking about what could be done to raise awareness around suicide prevention and mental health awareness. The connection between physical activity and emotional health is well documented, so a walk/run event seemed like a good fit.
The walk/run event aims to raise awareness about mental health in general, reduce the stigma associated with mental health, provide education in our community about suicide prevention and promote the benefits of physical activity for mental health.
The event was a great success and raised just over $1400, with 90 people participating in the run. $1200 of the funds raised were donated to the organization SPIN (Suicide Prevention Intervention Network) who then dispersed the funds to various group affiliates.
Funds were also used to support a bereavement group for parents who have lost a child from suicide, as well as sponsoring five community members to attend workshops, and print resources that have been placed at our local hospital and medical clinic. The pamphlets provide information about how to deal with suicide, and supporting others who have lost loved ones through suicide.
Just under 100 participants, ranging in age from a few months to 70 years, enjoyed a fantastic morning in support of mental health awareness. A children’s event was added this year and it was a big hit! Following the completion of the run, participants listened to Barb Reid, whose adult daughter died by suicide and Craig Heisinger, representing Project 11 (affiliated with True North/Winnipeg Jets), an organization that provides educational workshops about emotional health to youth. Miles for Mental Health 2018 raised close to $3000; donations of $2300 and $500 respectively were made to Project 11 and the Beautiful Plains School Division. Door prizes, a raffle draw and snacks rounded out the day. The organizing committee is very grateful for the tremendous support from the community.
Our theme for the year was mental health awareness for men.
We had 95 registered participants.
Our presenters, John Lackey and Jacy DeKoning, were insightful and thought provoking.
