Conflict is a natural part of any learning community - among students, between colleagues or within the classroom itself. Yet how teachers respond to conflict profoundly shapes the culture of learning and trust. This workshop, “Words used Differently: the Power of Nonviolent Communication,” invites educators to reimagine conflict not as disruption, but as a chance to build empathy, clarity and connection.
The session begins by exploring the nature and sources of conflict in educational settings, followed by an examination of alternative conflict resolution methods such as negotiation, mediation and restorative dialogue. Building on these foundations, the core principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) developed by Marshall Rosenberg will be introduced, focusing on how language can either escalate tension or foster understanding.
Using classroom-based examples and interactive exercises, educators will learn to express needs clearly, listen without judgment and foster respectful communication that strengthens relationships with students and colleagues alike.
