Timetable and activities

The Medical Educator and Clinical Development in Primary Care student-selected component (SSC) rotates sequentially six times over the academic. Unlike other SSC's, this module follows a flexible mixed-modality (in-person and remote) structure with a timetable that varies since it directly corresponds with the syllabuses of younger year students.

Given the varied structure of this module, Dr Vidya Mistry will clarify the timetable and activities for the four-week period at an introductory meeting. Students are also assigned a general practitioner (GP) tutor, who will host their student at their GP Surgery, support them throughout the module and grade their work. 

We expect students to partake in core activities, but we encourage students to use this SSC to pursue other additional activities, especially if they are interested in applying for the SEED award. Please see below for examples of activities alongside prior timetables and student-led teaching sessions.

Typical core activities:

• Prepare and facilitate Year 1-4 teaching sessions alongside GP Tutor.

• GP tutor observed student-led teaching sessions. These sessions can include Mock OSCEs, tutorials, and clinical skills teaching.

• Develop Mentoring Skills through multiple encounters with a group of younger year students during the placement.

• Access to Teaching Resources & training sessions arranged centrally by Community-Based Medical Education (CBME).

• Enhance generalist skills through Chronic Disease Clinics, nurse clinics, home visits, vaccination clinics, and health checks.

Additional activities examples:

• Shadowing GP Tutor and Running their own supervised surgeries.

• Exam question writing.

• Leading GP-based quality improvement projects.

• Evaluating community-based modules and presenting recommendations for impactful change to staff.

• Abstract creation and submission to national and international conferences.

As mentioned prior, and as demonstrated in the above examples, "this module follows a flexible mixed-modality (in-person and remote) structure with a timetable that varies since it directly corresponds with the syllabuses of younger year students". Host GP Practice with potential participation in Community-Based Medical Education (CBME) workshops (workshops may be virtual or in-person).

• Use of medical (e.g. peak flow meter), teaching and IT equipment at your allocated GP Surgery

• Use of teaching/conference facilities at your allocated GP Surgery

• Use of clinical and teaching space/rooms at GP Practice
