NCS Songs is a podcast published to introduce a variety of non-copyrighted instrumental songs to the public through a podcasting platform.
Although podcasts generally contain talk shows, interviews, and other forms of conversational content, we saw the opportunity to compile and publish some of the amazing music, by artists like Alan Walker and Tobu, to a podcast, which, in contrast to a music streaming application, allows for the listener to actually download the content without a subscription and most importantly, without ads.
Even though it is 100% free for us to maintain this podcast for our listeners, we also do it for free. We do it for you. When we could be playing ads and sponsors throughout our episodes, we choose not to, in order to keep the quality high. Since its launch on April 14, 2020, the NCS Songs grew to reach a total of more than 37,000 listeners, almost 35,000 of whom listened through Spotify.
On May 18, 2020, Spotify unexpectedly removed the NCS Songs podcast from their platform, undermining the source of over 94% of the podcast's listeners.
The next day, on May 19, 2020, Spotify-owned Anchor FM, the host of NCS Songs, blanked the RSS Feed and deleted the account from which NCS Songs was managed.
(Both of these actions were executed due to the alleged violation of Spotify's podcast content policies)
Between May 19 and May 22, numerous attempts were made to revive the NCS Songs podcast. Multiple other hosts were considered and Sound 72 even initiated an effort to host the podcast themself, using ftp on their own website. Despite their persistence, none of these efforts resulted in a favorable outcome.
On May 22, 2020, the decision was made to suspend all efforts related to the NCS Songs Podcast.
On May 24, 2020, a solution was discovered which enabled Sound 72 to independently host the NCS Songs podcast, and despite the decision to terminate the podcast just a few days prior, the podcast was relaunched onto a different RSS Feed.
On June 22, 2020, Spotify once again removed NCS Songs from their collection of podcasts, claiming it violated their policies. Although this was seen as nearly inevitable, steps were still taken beforehand in an attempt to prevent this outcome. Those steps were ineffective.
