Leota Math Program
What is it?
The Leota Math Program offers competitive math coaching taught by student volunteers (that's us!) through easy-to-follow lesson plans and pre-made homework, making it simple to get involved. Members are required to contribute 3 hours (2 hours for new members) on Wednesdays from 3 PM to 4 PM, all online. Participants can also earn NHS hours through this program.
Resources
Sign up to volunteer using the Volunteer Sign-Up Spreadsheet (found in StudentSquare) (make sure you're using your school account). Here you will also find access to the lesson materials and weekly zoom link.
Structure of a Volunteering Session
1. Warm Up Problems
In Lesson Materials:
Year # → Week # → STUDENT
Share the Week # STUDENT Worksheet in the Zoom Chat.
Give them time to do the questions on their own (5 minutes)
After the 5 minutes is up, start with question 1 and do “Waterfall” (say “3, 2, 1, enter,” and students will type their answer into the Zoom chat)
Ask for someone to show how to solve the problem.
If no response, annotate on the Zoom screen (ask host for screen sharing permissions)and solve the problem (check the answer key).
Repeat for remaining questions. Split questions among volunteers
2. Watch Video
In Lesson Materials:
Year # → Week # → VIDEO LINK
Screen share your Zoom screen with the VIDEO link in the folder of materials (make sure to share sound as well).
Make sure students are following along with the video, solving The Problems as the video goes through these problems.
3. Work on Piece It Together
In Lesson Materials:
Year # → Week # → STUDENT
Split up into breakout rooms based on grade level (1+ volunteer per breakout room).
Let the students work on the problems for some time.
After the time is up repeat same process with warm up problems for Piece It Together problems.
4. Mention HOMEWORK
Please do not assign the homework in the Google Drive. Homework will be sent out by Leota PTSA separately.
