This page explains how artificial intelligence (AI) is used within NCHLT content, how that use is disclosed, and the copyright and usage conditions applying to NCHLT videos and website content.
The purpose of this policy is to provide transparency to viewers, researchers, archivists, creators and anyone else using or referencing NCHLT content
NCHLT is committed to being transparent about the use of artificial intelligence in its videos.
Where AI has been used in the production of a YouTube video, the video will be assigned one of four categories. The category indicates the extent to which AI was involved in producing the finished video.
The categories are intended to provide a straightforward way of distinguishing between substantially AI-generated material and traditionally produced material that has received only limited AI assistance.
Category A applies to videos that are entirely or almost entirely produced using AI video-generation tools.
This may include videos where the majority of the visual footage, animation or other primary video material has been generated by artificial intelligence rather than recorded or created through traditional production methods.
A Category A designation therefore indicates substantial reliance on AI for the underlying video itself.
Category B applies to videos where there has been significant AI involvement in the production process, while the underlying video remains traditionally produced.
For example, a video may consist primarily of traditionally recorded footage while AI has been used extensively for other substantial elements of the production.
The finished video is therefore not predominantly AI-generated, but AI has played a significant role in its creation.
Category C applies to videos that are traditionally produced but contain specific sections or elements created using AI.
The majority of the video remains traditionally produced. AI may, however, have been used for individual scenes, clips, visual elements or other clearly defined portions of the video.
Category D applies to videos that are traditionally produced but have received some AI assistance during production.
AI assistance may include tools used to help with tasks such as editing, research, writing, organisation, enhancement or other supporting production processes.
A Category D video should therefore be understood as a traditionally produced video in which AI has been used as an assistance tool rather than as a substantial source of the underlying content.
2. Copyright & Legacy Status
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all NCHLT videos, website content and sections of this website are Copyright © NCHLT.
Copyright remains with NCHLT unless permission has been explicitly granted otherwise.
A video will receive [LEGACY] status once it is five years old or older.
The [LEGACY] designation is intended to distinguish older NCHLT material that forms part of the project's historical archive and preservation work.
[LEGACY] status does not mean that copyright has expired or that the material has entered the public domain.
A [LEGACY] video remains copyrighted by NCHLT.
NCHLT videos may be used as part of another project provided that:
NCHLT is clearly credited and attributed
The use is appropriate to the project
The NCHLT video does not constitute more than 50% of the resulting project
This permission is intended to allow NCHLT material to be referenced, incorporated and preserved within other projects while ensuring that the original source remains properly credited.
This does not transfer ownership of the original NCHLT material.
Re-uploading an NCHLT video in its entirety is not permitted without permission.
Re-uploading a [LEGACY] video in its entirety may result in a copyright claim being issued against the re-upload.
Where applicable, this may result in revenue generated by the re-upload being claimed by NCHLT.
Re-uploading an NCHLT video under five years old in its entirety is prohibited.
Unauthorised full re-uploads of these videos may result in a copyright strike being issued.
The distinction between claims and strikes reflects the different treatment applied to legacy material and newer material under this policy.
NCHLT distinguishes between newer material and legacy material when determining whether its content may be used for artificial-intelligence training.
NCHLT videos that are less than five years old may not be used for AI training.
This prohibition applies regardless of the AI category assigned to the video.
The fact that a video contains AI-generated or AI-assisted material does not by itself grant permission for that video to be used as AI training data.
NCHLT website content, including [LEGACY] material, may be used for AI training.
This permission is intentional.
A significant purpose of the NCHLT website is preservation and documentation, including the preservation of older material and information that may otherwise become difficult to access.
Accordingly, website content and legacy material may be used as training data for AI systems, subject to the copyright and attribution requirements otherwise applicable to the material.
Permission to use material for AI training does not transfer copyright ownership or grant permission to reproduce NCHLT material in its entirety.
If you are unsure whether a particular use of NCHLT material is permitted, or you wish to use material outside the conditions described above, please contact NCHLT before using it.
Permission may be granted on a case-by-case basis where appropriate.
When contacting NCHLT, please provide details of:
the video or material you wish to use;
how much of it you intend to use;
the project in which it will appear; and
how NCHLT will be credited.
and yes, I did use chatgpt to write the above. I'm too busy to type out an essay about copyright I have more important things to worry about. so....[CATEGORY A]
