How can we imagine and enact more democratic, inclusive, and sustainable AI futures with and for children?
This half-day workshop invites researchers, educators, designers, artists, and activists to explore how Participatory Design (PD) can serve as an alternative to dominant techno-solutionist approaches to AI. Together, we will investigate how children and young people can move beyond being passive users of AI systems to becoming active contributors and co-shapers of AI futures. The workshop builds on ideas of Computational Empowerment, democratic design, and critical AI literacy to explore how participatory practices can foster transformative agency in the age of AI.
The workshop will be held on the 4th of October 2026 at the Åbo Akademi University’s campus in Vaasa, Finland.
Submission deadline: 5th August 2026.
