The North Carolina Collaborative for Mathematics Learning (NC2ML) has been actively supporting educators throughout the state since 2016. They have created instructional frameworks, conducted research on various topics, and now, their latest initiative, The VISIONS Project, aims to establish a shared vision for high-quality math instruction. While different grade bands (Elementary K-5, Middle 6-8, and High 9-12) have distinct focuses, they all use research-based approaches to empower students as confident, collaborative problem solvers. Elementary and Middle School cohorts are currently developing resources, with High School 9-12 resources being rolled out monthly.
A central element in NC2ML's strategy is the use of mathematical discourse, a powerful tool for addressing student participation disparities, building positive math identities, and improving math achievement. This approach encourages students to discuss their thought processes, share solutions, and engage in meaningful mathematical conversations. NC2ML has introduced a set of nine "Discourse Moves" to enhance math education across various instructional settings, empowering both teachers and students to unlock each student's full potential.
Recognizing that effective implementation requires comprehensive resources, NC2ML offers Teaching and Learning Monthly Kits. These kits provide detailed explanations of each Discourse Move, its importance, and guidelines for teachers and students, along with real-life examples. They also offer sentence starters to assist students in their math discussions. For professional development, NC2ML provides a Professional Development Monthly Kit, including slides for each Discourse Move suitable for use in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and professional development sessions. These kits offer recommendations for utilizing Teaching and Learning resources effectively in PD settings. NC2ML also caters to administrative leaders with an Administrative Leadership Monthly Kit, offering information on the significance of each Discourse Move and its connections to broader educational strategies, such as the Portrait of a Graduate and the North Carolina Essential Standards (NCEES).
In the quest for equitable and engaging math education, NC2ML's approach shows that even small changes, grounded in research-based practices like mathematical discourse, can lead to significant improvements. Their commitment to providing educators with the tools and resources needed to empower students as confident and diverse mathematical thinkers is a promising step towards a brighter future for math education in North Carolina.
