The Load

Summary:

Students will be introduced to the farmers' market and be asked to create a cart to transport food. Materials will cost “money”, and K-2 will have a budget. K-1 will just have number constraints, and grade 2 will have monetary amounts. Grades 3-5 will have to calculate profit based on the cost of their cart and earnings from carrying food. Food will be represented by Unifix cubes. Students (K-2) will pull their cart in a designated area to test.

Standards:

[NC.K.CC.4] Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities.

[NC.K.MD.2] Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference.

[NC.2.MD.8] Solve word problems involving whole dollar amounts, using the $ symbol appropriately.

[NC.4.OA.1] Multiply or divide to solve word problems.
