Popcorn Box Engineering

Summary:

Students work in teams to follow criteria and constraints to design their own container that holds pompoms (popcorn). When this is completed they need to test and record how many pom-poms their container will hold.

Standards:

[NC.K.CC.1] Know number names and recognize patterns in the counting sequence by: counting to 100 by ones; counting to 100 by tens.

[NC.1.NBT.1] Count to 150, starting at any number less than 150.

[NC.2.NBT.2] Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

[NC.2.MD.8] Solve word problems involving: quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies within 99¢, using ¢ symbols appropriately; whole dollar amounts, using the $ symbol appropriately.

[NC.4.NF.3] Understand and justify decompositions of fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100.

[C.5.NBT.7] Compute and solve real-world problems with multi-digit whole numbers and decimal numbers.
