Bridge Building

Summary:

Students will learn about bridge design and be tasked with building a bridge that can span a piece of paper and will be placed on top of keva planks. Bridges will be tested with weight (coins or water bottle). Grades 4-5 will measure angles of shapes on their bridges.

Standards:

[NC.K.G.2] Correctly name squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres regardless of their orientations or overall size.

[NC.4.MD.6] Develop an understanding of angles and angle measurement.

Supplies:

• Plastic straws

• Construction paper

• Popsicle sticks

• Masking tape

• Pipe cleaners

• Protractors (Grades 4-5)

• Scissors

• 40 pennies/coins or a full plastic water bottle

• Printer paper

• Keva planks

• Food scale (optional)
