Mr. Reid brings a wealth of music education experience. He has fulfilled nearly every musical role as a musical jack-of-all-trades. As a musician he has toured internationally not only as a clarinetist and horn player, but also as a vocal soloist and choir member. He currently is a woodwind coach for the Napa Valley Youth Symphony and a regular member of local ensembles.

At Napa Christian, Mr. Reid displays not only his depth of knowledge, but an amazing ability to present musical concepts in a fun and engaging way for all age groups, first hooking students with a love of music, and then developing their technical knowledge and skills. He excels at working with students of all skill levels, as can be seen at our amazing musical productions during Christmas and Springtime, where he personally chooses and arranges each song so that all of the students shine.

The music classes for this year have been revised and revamped. I am trying my best to offer the same experience and material that we would have on campus. At the same time, I do not want to overwhelm our parents and students with even more to do. The idea behind each assignment and activity is to expand the musical capacity and create an enjoyable outlet. Find your grade level area below and see what’s in store.

K-2

Early elementary music is all about exploring what music has to offer. It is the music department’s goal to train our young musicians to speak the language of music. There are many new sights and sounds to experience for our young ones. A lot of our focus this year will be on rhythm and culture.

3-4

This year, Mr. Blue and I will be tag-team teaching music. He is an accomplished percussionist (among other things) and plans to teach on cultural drumming and other aspects of rhythm. On the other side, I will be focusing on pitch and harmony in our recorder units. These lend themselves to general music history and ensemble musicianship. I am quite sure that it will be a fun class!

5-6

We will start with musical exploration, focusing on instrumental music. The goal is to experience aspects of each instrument family and be able to choose one to play. When we are all back on campus, we will start our beginning band class based on some of those choices. In the meantime, I would like to be able to meet one-on-one or in small groups to do demos and trials with students so they can find

7-12

Since we have scaled our performing arts electives back this year, band is our only official offering. The class itself has been altered to accommodate aspects of the missing classes, however. I am bringing in parts of percussion ensemble/drumline, recording, and world music studies. Everything we do in the class will have a purpose to culminate in either a video or live performance.
