NBN Info

On this page I will explain what the NBN is and what the different types of NBN there are and I will go more in depth into how they work.

NBN or NBN Co Limited, is an Australian government owned corporation which was tasked to build the Nation Broadband Network (NBN that how that came about). Where NBN becomes the wholesale provider of broadband access in Australia.

In the 2013 federal election year Gillard/Rudd government proposed a network where FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) would be run to every house and FW (Fixed Wireless) and Satellite would be used for the rest. But the Abbott/Turnbull government proposed a multi-technology mix which would include FTTP, FTTN,FTTB,FW,SAT,HFC,FTTC (or FTTdp), as it would be "quicker" and "cheaper". In the end Abbott/Turnbull government was voted in and there proposed was to be created.

NBN is set to be complied in 2020 with it's mix of technologies, If you would like to know more about the issues that NBN has had I will have more into at the bottom of this page.

The order below is from the best technologies to the worst technologies. I will explain the order and why it is this way in the NBN issues part.

  • FTTP (Fibre To The Premises), is what some people call the "rolls royce" of the NBN, as it's name suggests you get Fibre to Premise.
  • HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial), is only available in the major city's including, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, and a few more, where NBN took control of that network that was already in place.
  • FTTC (Fibre To The Cube) or FTTdp (Fibre To The Disputation Point), is where fibre is run to pit outside the property and then connected to the existing copper network.
  • FTTB (Fibre To The Building/ Basement) is where you get fibre run to the building or basement and then contented to the existing copper cable. It is used or multi apartment buildings.
  • FTTN (Fibre To The Node), this is what most people received, where a node get built and the fibre goes to it, from there it goes to the existing ADSL pillar and used the old copper network from there.
  • FW (Fixed Wireless), is where fibre get run to a tower and then transformed into microwave waves to another tower where the signal gets rebroadcast out which an antenna on the premise can pick up.
  • SAT (Satellite), is where you get a dish on you're premise and you can connect to satellite for internet.
