ToolHive Privacy Policy
ToolHive Privacy Policy
_Last updated: July 2026_
ToolHive ("the extension") is built to work entirely on your device.
## What ToolHive does NOT do
- It does not collect, transmit, or sell any personal data.
- It does not use analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting of any kind.
- It does not track your browsing history.
- It does not display ads or third-party trackers.
- It does not read your clipboard in the background.
## What ToolHive stores, and where
All notes, pinned tools, recently-used tools, theme preference, and
settings are stored using Chrome's built-in `chrome.storage.local` API.
This data lives only in your local browser profile. It is never sent to
any ToolHive server, because ToolHive has no server. Uninstalling the
extension removes this data.
## Pages you're viewing (SEO tools only)
The SEO tools (Meta Tag Viewer, Heading Structure, Schema Viewer, Open
Graph Preview, Twitter Card Preview, Canonical Checker, Robots.txt Viewer,
Sitemap Viewer, Keyword Density) read information from the currently
active browser tab — but only at the moment you open one of those tools,
and only to display that information back to you inside the popup.
Nothing about the pages you visit is stored or transmitted anywhere.
Robots.txt Viewer and Sitemap Viewer fetch `robots.txt` and `sitemap.xml`
directly from the same site's own domain, the same way your browser
already does when loading that site.
## AI tools (optional, off by default)
Grammar Fixer, Rewrite Text, Summarizer and Email Generator are the only
features that send data outside your device — and only if you choose to
use them. To use them, you provide your own Anthropic API key in
**Settings**. When you run one of these tools, the text you enter is sent
directly from your browser to Anthropic's API (`api.anthropic.com`) to
generate a response, under Anthropic's own privacy policy and terms. Your
API key is stored only in `chrome.storage.local` on your device. If you
never add a key, these four tools simply do not run, and no data leaves
your device through them.
## Third-party services used by specific tools
A few tools rely on free public services to render images, and therefore
require an internet connection:
- **QR Generator** sends the text you enter to `api.qrserver.com` to
render a QR code image.
- **Barcode Generator** sends the text you enter to `barcode.tec-it.com`
to render a barcode image.
- **Currency Converter** fetches exchange rates from `open.er-api.com`.
These requests contain only the specific value you typed into that tool
(e.g. the text for a QR code), not your browsing history or any other
ToolHive data.
## Permissions
See the permissions table in `README.md` for a plain-language explanation
of why each Chrome permission is requested. None are used to collect data
about you — they exist so specific tools (SEO tools, the right-click menu,
the copy buttons, pomodoro notifications) can function.
## Changes to this policy
If ToolHive's data practices ever change, this file will be updated and
the version number in the Chrome Web Store listing will be incremented.
