I will establish a $650 monthly payment to all Superians making under $30,000 a year as your Governor. While our State Treasury may not have the same capabilities as the Federal Government, Superior can still afford to alleviate poverty and provide cash relief for millions across our state. This money will be used as a life raft for those struggling and currently trapped in poverty, and it will spread into circulation through our local economies as it fuels growth and jobs creation. Let's take a direct hit at poverty, Superior, and give people cash.
Every Superian deserves a secure bank account free from the predatory practices of the private banking industry. Small businesses and local governments deserve low-interest loans to fund the startups and infrastructure Superior needs. Our state deserves a public bank which works on behalf of the people, channeling capital to people-centered projects in our communities. I support a public bank and intend to create one as Governor because I support the prosperity of this state, and I recognize the benefits such a bank could provide for Superior's economy, infrastructure, and people.
Let me be clear - we cannot wait any longer on Climate Change. We must take action, including on the level of state government. That is why I will pass a Green New Deal for Superior as Governor. We can reinvent this state's economy in green and sustainable ways, moving away from the fossil fuels which are going to kill us. This doesn't just mean funding green energy. It means reimagining our cities as walkable urban centers with well-funded and accessible public transportation. It means funding nuclear energy as a key and necessary component of our Climate Change fight. And it means creating an economy which works for all, creating green growth for every Superian.
Too many families in this state are struggling. That is why as Governor I will implement a universal child benefit of $1,000 every year to parents for each child they have. This would provide necessary resources for parents to provide for their children, helping families across our state and taking countless children out of poverty. No child should grow up in poverty, and giving cash directly to parents is the best way to provide for Superior's families.
We need to build more housing and let people build more housing. Superior must get rid of the restrictive zoning laws in our state which impede the development of affordable, plentiful housing, and I pledge to end housing scarcity in this state as Governor through a combination of public and private development. Superior, it's time to say yes to affordable housing in our backyard.
The Drug War has been a complete and total disaster, and Superior must end its participation in this sick penalization of addiction. That is why I will decriminalize the personal use of all drugs in Superior as Governor and will pursue the legalization of psychedelics such as LSD. This is not ignoring the harm drug addiction can cause, and my administration will provide funding for rehabilitation services and safe injection sites to help struggling addicts. Addiction is not a personal failing, it is a disease, and our state must treat it as such.
The Earth's land is our common heritage. It was not produced by any of us, and Superior must enact a land value tax as a means of recognizing the collective nature of our land. Right now, wealthy landowners collect an unearned income simply through their land ownership, and by taxing them we may redistribute their wealth through my basic income plan, ensuring that low-income Superians may find profit from what is our collective fortune. A land value tax has been endorsed by countless economists and progressive advocates throughout the years, and as Governor, I will implement one as part of our tax system.
Big money in politics is suppressing the interests of the people. Progressive voices are drowned out in a sea of corporate PAC money, and Governor Comped himself benefits from the patronage of wealthy donors. As Governor, I will launch a program which has already been implemented in the city of Seattle. All Superians will be provided with a $100 democracy voucher every election cycle, a voucher they may spend donating to the candidate of their choice. These democracy dollars will drown out the influence of big money in politics, restoring the control of everyday Superians over our politics.
It should not be a controversial opinion to say that public funds should go to public schools. However, for years Republicans have been attempting to defund our public school system through the charter school scam, giving away public funds to profit-seeking charters which fail to deliver for our children. As Governor, I will abolish charter schools in Superior, rediverting funds currently committed to charters back into our public school system. We must invest in our children's education, instead of throwing money into untrustworthy, poorly performing charter schools.
As I proposed in the Superior Senate last year, I will implement a 10% tax on the sale of firearms as Governor. While I support the right to responsibly bear arms, this mild tax on gun sales will generate revenue which will be committed to fund mental health resources in our schools, providing needed resources for our struggling youth and potential shooters. This is a smart solution to combat both gun violence and the mental health crisis among our youth, and I will be proud to pass this plan as Governor.
As a trans woman, I understand the need for Superior to have a Governor who is committed to LGBTQ+ rights. That is why, once I'm elected, I will defend and expand LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in our state. As Governor, I will fund mental health resources for LGBTQ+ youth, who continue to struggle with high rates of depression and suicidality, particularly trans youth. I will ensure that our public schools are safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth who do not have a welcoming environment at home, and I will continue to fight for our fundamental right to exist after I assume office. As the most visible trans woman in the country, I pledge to serve as Governor in the interests of the LGBTQ+ community, continuing our fight for inclusion and representation.
We all celebrate Barnes Day, however as Governor I intend to create Governor Barnes Appreciation Month, celebrating former Governor Barnes and his progressive leadership of our state. We must not let our first elected Governor fall away from memory, and I believe Barnes' legacy of achievement and progress deserves recognition and appreciation by our state. Governor Barnes Appreciation Month will take place during the month of March, when Barnes was elected, and I will be glad to set it into place as Governor.
