A Cuppa Ceylon Tea is an original solo theatre work written and performed by Nayanathara, developed during her studies at Catalyst Institute for Creative Arts and Technology in Berlin. Directed with tutor guidance, the performance combines historical inspiration, fictional storytelling, traditional Sri Lankan cultural elements, music, comedy,
and emotional storytelling within a 30-minute theatrical format. The showcase premiered in March 2026 at Catalyst Theatre in Berlin.
Set during British colonial Sri Lanka between 1817–1818 during the Great Rebellion, the work explores themes of colonialism, love, displacement, cultural memory, family, and emotional longing. Through fictional characters inspired by historical contexts, the performance presents a deeply personal yet universally relatable story about home, identity, separation, and hope.
The piece integrates Sinhala songs, traditional food references, Sri Lankan costume design, local language expressions, and culturally specific storytelling techniques to create an immersive intercultural theatrical experience. While rooted in Sri Lankan history and identity, the emotional themes of nostalgia, belonging, and loss resonate across cultures and audiences.
