George Mason University in the Johnson Center, Fairfax, VA

Saturday February 1, 2020; Registration 8:00 AM

Parking is available in LOT A with an area reserved for MATHCOUNTS. There will be student guides and signs to direct you to the Johnson Center, a short walk from LOT A. A GMU campus map, with the Johnson Center located in the center (key number 29), and a parking map (park in Lot A) are available at:

Enter the Johnson Center at the Ground Floor Main entrance door. Proceed through the Lobby to the Registration area in front of Dewberry Hall.

Students: Fairfax and George Washington Chapters will test in Dewberry Hall; Northern Virginia Chapter will test in the Bistro. Once the doors are opened to the Test Room, go directly to the assigned tables with the school name on the table. Wait at the table for your coach and instructions. Please note that the Test Room may not be open until after 8:00.

Primary Coaches: Sign in to receive the registration envelope at Registration table in the lobby outside Dewberry. Note actions to accomplish:

  • Confirm primary coach email and cell phone number
  • Distribute and explain preprinted Test Sheet Labels and Colored Dots to your students (complete directions inside Coach Envelope – example attached)
  • Complete and turn in Attendance Confirmation Form (inside Coach envelope)

Meet your students at the assigned tables in Dewberry Hall or the Bistro. Each school will have one round table to seat their team with room for additional Individual students. Schools with more than 8 students will have additional seats labeled for their school at an adjacent table. Schools with less than 10 students may share a table with another school. Coaches please make sure students know if they are on the Team or competing as an Individual Student. After the Target Round, all Individual Students (not on a team) will clear the Test Room with their belongings.

Changes: The only student changes allowed are for an individual student to move up to a TEAM position because of an absent or sick team member. (Absences and changes must be reported on Attendance Confirmation form at Registration.) There will be no switching or new students accepted. We appreciate your help on this in order to ensure tests get correctly scored and accounted.

Notification for Tie Breakers, Countdown Round, and Ray Powell Award : Each school’s primary coach will receive an email by 2:00 pm that lists students who should return for tie breakers and the Countdown Round, and who should attend the award ceremony to receive the newly instituted Ray Powell Memorial award (which will be awarded annually to the Mathlete in each chapter who has the highest percentage increase in their individual scores relative to their scores at last year’s Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS competition).

Countdown and Awards Program: Parents and students are encouraged to return for the Countdown Round and Awards Presentation. There will be NO photographs, videos, or recordings during the Countdown Round program. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. At the Awards Presentation, parents are welcome to come forward during the awards as announced for photographs; however, please move back for the next award presentation.

Supplies: Students should bring several sharpened pencils to work the problems along with their own approved calculator. Scratch paper will be provided. When allowed, students may use any calculator (including programmable and graphing calculators) that does not contain a QWERTY (typewriter‑like) keypad. Smart phones, laptops, tablets, keyboard type (QWERTY) calculators or PDAs cannot be used. Per MATHCOUNTS rules - students are not permitted to have pagers, cell phones, PDAs, radios, or MP3 players in the competition room. If students bring them, we will have the coaches secure them until after the competition.

Coach Meeting: Coaches will meet in George’s after the testing gets started. We will discuss more about the program and distribute items at that time. Following the coach meeting, you are welcomed to use the Gold Room to meet other coaches and share ideas! Elementary schools should get together with the Middle School coaches. We must always have one primary adult coach present at the competition who is available via email and cell phone. This is necessary if questions or problems arise during the competition.

Weather: As of today, the weather on Saturday is predicted to be good; however, during wintertime in the Washington, DC area, there is always the potential for weather disruptions. In the event that weather forces a postponement of the competition from February 1 to February 15, I will e-mail all primary coaches with an announcement. We will be monitoring the weather and school activity closing status on Friday and make our decision as soon as reasonable. Our MATHCOUNTS competition will be automatically postponed if either Fairfax County or Arlington County school activities, or both, are cancelled for February 1. It is the coach’s responsibility to notify parents.

Please pass this information on to your parents and assistant coaches as well. If you have questions or need clarifications, please let me know!
