Here is where information updates from my primary research will go!
2/3 - I am drafting up a Google Form to gather data from students and adults in the community. In this anonymous survey, I will collect information on their age, education, location, and political bias. I will also ask if they believe in any conspiracies and if they wish, they can share which ones. Additionally, I will be asking about their opinions on masks, social distancing, and the Coronavirus. Lastly, I plan on seeing where they get their information from (social media, the news, etc.) and if they ever check their sources.
2/8 - The issue that I am currently facing is that I'm not sure who to contact for my conspirator interview. I have joined a couple of Facebook groups of conspirators but I need to work to find a safe and trustworthy interviewee. For my second interview, I will be reading out to Rachel Runnels who wrote a paper and gave a TED Talk about Conspiracy Theories and the Quest for Truth. Her research path has been very similar to mine, which is why I would love to talk to her.
2/20 - Throughout the past few weeks and over break, I have compiled a rough draft of my survey and interview questions. I am currently looking into case studies and how that format could possibly be useful to present my research. I think it would be interesting to do an extensive case study on a particular conspiracist, finding out as much as I can about their background and their beliefs. The roadblock that I am continuing to face is I'm not sure who to recruit as the conspiracy theorist.
3/3 - For a few classes, I've been focusing on my Review of Literature in preparation for the panels and we just completed them! I think my presentation went well and the feedback I received was very helpful. Ms. Bambi proposed that I look into how schools are working to educate their students about misinformation, which is directly connected to my idea for a tangible. I have not extensively searched what different schools are doing in this area, so right after I finish up my survey and interview questions, I will begin to research that. Hopefully, with this information, I will be able to create some sort of program or webinar to teach kids how to identify false information in the media or something along those lines.
3/8 - I just finished my draft questionnaire survey and put it into a Google Form. Next class, I'll get it edited and approved by Ms. D'Alise. Additionally, I was thinking about what Ms. Bambi said regarding the role schools play in educating their students about misinformation in the media. I might email all of the Andover Elementary and Middle School principals and ask them what they think about me holding a webinar or something of the sort to present the importance of finding credible sources.
3/15 - Ms. D'Alise looked over my Google Form Questionnaire and suggested a couple of changes to make so that it is ready to be sent out. Things that need to be modified include the political affiliation scale, timings on how often the individual uses the internet and social media, adding a definition of "conspiracy theories", and asking if the person follows Covid guidelines.
3/19 - The final email has been approved by Ms. D'Alise so I will send them out on Monday! With the information I get back, I will be able to learn how the APS system educates students about misinformation in the media, and I can start constructing what my tangible will look like.
3/22 - I just completed my survey and have added it to the class spreadsheet. For the next week or so, I will continue to share it out on social media and to friends/family to get as much data as possible. Here is a link to the form: https://forms.gle/LzBPmYMKGtWFM8Fe8
3/24 - I put my survey on my Instagram story and have gotten 20 responses so far. I'll continue to share it on other social media sites to get more information.
3/30 - Mrs. Downs emailed me back this morning and she gave me a lot of important information on what students in Andover, specifically WHMS, are taught about internet safety and digital citizenship. By next week, I'll try to interview her to get some more information regarding that. I also got to present my primary research findings in class and I got some good feedback on how I should create more of an arc with the information that I have collected.
4/8 - I got to conduct my two interviews with Mrs. Downs and Mrs. Porter. Together we discussed the middle school curriculum surrounding internet safety, verifying sources, discerning opinion from facts in the media, and more. They brought to light some issues that I hadn't even thought of, such as the clickbait advertisement links placed at the bottom of some news sites. Younger kids have a hard time figuring out if those sponsored posts are true/important. Additionally, they shared links used in their classes which could help me build my own curriculum.
