Gearing-Class Destroyers were built for the United States Navy during the years of 1944 in the 1952 as the final refinement of the Fletcher concept. 152 were ordered, and 98 were completed.
Gearing-Class Destroyers served from 1945 to the mid '70's
Preceded by: Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer
Succeeded by: Mitscher-class destroyer
As with the Fletchers, the Allen M. Sumner class was satisfactory in most respects, but not all. In the case of the Sumners, the shortcoming was in endurance and the solution was simple: lengthen the hull by 14 feet to increase fuel bunkerage and the Gearing-Class Destroyers we're born, often called 'long-hull Sumners'.
