Northampton-Class Cruisers were built for the United States Navy during the years of 1928 to 1931. The Northamptons were a reaction to the weight and cost of the immediately preceding Pensacola class. There were 6 ships built in this class.
Northampton-Class Cruisers served between the years of 1928 to 1946.
Preceded by: Pensacola-class cruiser
Succeeded by: Portland-class cruiser
These ships were also the first U.S. ships to adopt a hangar for aircraft, and the immediately following Portland class was essentially a modified Northampton. All but Augusta of the Northampton class ships served in the Pacific during the Second World War, and three were lost in action (USS Northampton, USS Chicago and USS Houston). The Augusta served in the Mediterranean, with the British Home Fleet and took part in the Normandy landings.
