They were modified versions of the New Mexico class featuring improved underwater armor for better torpedo protection and increased gun elevation for over the horizon targeting. Tennessee-Class Battleship Tennessee was damaged by two bombs and California was sunk by two torpedoes and two bombs at Pearl Harbor. Both ships were extensively reconstructed into more heavily armed vessels that resembled the newer South Dakota class. After reconstruction both ships saw extensive action in the Pacific theater.
