South Dakota-class battleships were built for the United States Navy during the years of 1939 to 1942. They were designed to the same treaty standards as the preceding North Carolina class and had the same main battery, but were more compact and better protected. United States Navy built 4 of these Battleships.

South Dakota-class battleships served between the years of 1942 to 1947.
