USS Hornet (CV-8) was built for the United States Navy during the years of 1939 to 1940. Hornet was the last of three Yorktown-Class aircraft carriers to be built.

USS Hornet (CV-8) launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. She participated in the Battle of Midway, and the Buin-Faisi-Tonolai Raid. In the Solomon Islands campaign she was partook in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands where she was damaged beyond repair by enemy torpedo and dive bombers. With the Japanese surface force closing in, Hornet was abandoned and later torpedoed and sunk by approaching Japanese destroyers.
