Chapayev-Class Cruisers were built for the Soviet Navy during the years of 1939 to 1947. The design was based on the Kirov-class cruiser, but with significant changes in armament. Only 5 of this class were built.
Chapayev-Class Cruisers served between the years of 1950 to 1981.

Chapayev-Class Cruisers were a large project, seventeen ships were authorized in 1939 and eleven ordered. Six ships were to be built for the Baltic Fleet, four for the Black Sea Fleet and one for the Pacific Fleet. Seven ships were actually laid down before the German invasion in 1941.
