Yūbari-Class Experimental Cruiser (夕張) were built for the Imperial Japanese Navy during the years of 1922 to 1923. She was designed as an experimental scout cruiser.
Yūbari served between the years of 1923 to 1944.
Yūbari was built with the highest possible speed and weaponry in mind, but also weight reduction. To achieve this, the armor was integrated directly into the hull structure, forming the side walls and deck. giving her a much more superior armor than the previous ships of her class. Yūbari took part in the Solomon Islands Campaign, Yūbari participated in the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August, scoring several hits on the American destroyer USS Ralph Talbot, and one of the torpedoes that sank the heavy cruiser USS Vincennes. She was sunk by the US Submarine Bluegill, April 1944.
