Tribal Class Destroyers were built for the Royal Navy during the years of 1936 to 1945. Tribal Class were the British answer to the larger Destroyers being built by Japan, Italy and Germany. There were 31 of this class planned, 27 were built.   (3 were built in Australia, for the Royal Australian Navy, and 8 were built for the Royal Canadian Navy)

Tribal Class Destroyers served between the years of 1938 to 1963.

Preceded by:  I class

Succeeded by: J class

Tribal Class Destroyers were the Royal Navy's most modern and powerful destroyers during WWII. Because of this, they were often selected for special tasks and as a result, losses were heavy.   12 of the 16 made before and during the war were lost in combat.
