Gazelle-Class Cruisers were built for Germany's Imperial Navy during the years of 1897 to 1904. The design of the Gazelle merged the fleet scout with the colonial cruiser. There were 10 of this class built.

Gazelle-Class Cruisers all served with the fleet when they were first commissioned. Most were used as coastal defense ships early in the war. SMS Ariadne was sunk at the Battle of Heligoland Bight in August 1914, SMS Undine was torpedoed in the Baltic by a British submarine in November 1915, and SMS Frauenlob was sunk at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916.
