I am just starting out making music and I'm going to be doing some lofi hip hop for guitar backing tracks and also really ambient tracks to listen to while flying. Does anyone know where to get "nature" sounds for background noise (waterfalls, rain, wind in trees, fire crackles etc.)? I am literally just starting so some of the intracacies of bringing in sounds from mp3s or other sources is not something I know how to do, but if it's the main way I will learn. Any help/tips/questions/stories are welcome! Thank you for your help and I'm sure I'll have more to come as just looking at my DAW is overwhelming.

This one definitely sounds like winter. Again, apologies for Instagram cutting it off, but it starts out with the sound of someone crunching around in some freshly fallen snow. There's something so specific about footsteps through the first snow and it was captured perfectly.

The Ambient Earth Nature Loops sound effects collection includes traditional and alternative points of view on the sounds of wind, water and ocean sounds, rain, thunder, sound of forests and mountain environments, summer and nighttime nature sounds and more.

The collection is a fantastic complement to any audio production needing to recreate organic environments or natural soundscapes. It was curated specifically for use in games, multi-layer environments, background sound effects and designed outdoor ambiences. Bring the sounds of the great outdoors, inside your audio project with The Ambient Earth Nature Loops!

Now you can deliver the awesome power of nature in any sound production with ease because all sounds are premixed. Sound files are ready to drag and drop into your favorite DAW software too. All files inside Ambient Earth Nature Loops loop seamlessly. Most loops are 45-60 seconds in duration and can be played for as long as you need.

Recording the sounds of the natural world is my passion. From capturing vibrant habitat soundscapes to the voices of individual species, I love tracking down rare and captivating sound. In a world where man-made noise is ever pervasive, finding pristine wild sound can be a challenge and my work often involves travel to remote locations.

Today we will be showing you how you can take pre-existing sound samples from nature (wind, rain, fire, tree rustling) to generate extended soundscapes. We will first be looking at what makes a sound appear continuous to our ear. Then we will be exploring the editing techniques to generate new audio from preexisting samples.

Taking a short sound sample and making it continue as one sound is especially useful for when you want to make a very long background layer for a visual, transition to a song, live set, audio installation, or when making ambient music.

Sometimes it is not possible to find a rain or wind sample that sounds perfect for three hours. Inside the sample there is an interfering sound, a strange discontinuity, or the original sample is only one minute long.

Initially we might try to loop a short consistent portion of the sound file over and over again, but looping a very short sound for a large length of time will not result in a good representation of the subtle inconsistencies that occur in nature.

My definition of a good continuous nature sound for this article will be a sound that cannot be recognised as a loop and does not have any audible jarring artifacts that will make us lose focus from listening to the central sound.

What we have just done with editing is to create a randomisation of cuts to create new material that sounds natural from the most constant position in the original audio source file. In a future article we will look at useful synthesis techniques to simplify this process.

Each national park has a unique soundscape. The natural and cultural sounds in parks awaken a sense of wonder that connects us to the qualities that define these special places. They are part of a web of resources that the National Park Service protects under the Organic Act. From the haunting calls of bugling elk in mountains to the patriotic calls of bugling horns across a historic battlefield, NPS invites you to experience our parks through this world of sound.

I've used the Audio Technica AT-8024 selectable shotgun or stereo mic occasionally for nature with my GH4, but usually for performances. It does well with the bass, and specs show a +/- 3dB 40-15,000Hz response, and 0, -10, -20dB sensitivity settings that might make it good for thunder. About $230 USD.

Recording thunder storm and rain is the most tough and risky job. For recording such sound, I always prefer to go with such microphone which sounds familiar and natural to me. Mostly I use Neumann KU-100 Dummy Head and Sennheiser MKH 20

A separate Zoom H 4 microphone is quite versatile. You can either plug it in to the camera input or record separately and have full controls. These small mics are a good way to add ambient sound. You can move them to where the sound is. Check out zoom microphones. And definitely get whatever you add off the hot shoe. Good listening woodsman.

The LowePro PhotoSport Outdoor is a camera pack for photographers who also need a well-designed daypack for hiking and other outdoor use. If that sounds like you, the PhotoSport Outdoor may be a great choice, but as with any hybrid product, there are a few tradeoffs.
