Fair warning, I'm a talker... so this is going to be a bit of a spiel...

I started this business as an independent mum trying to generate a bit more financial certainty and comfort. 'Bit', like an extra $100 per week. Or 'bit' like, "oh shoot it's birthday season and I'm a bit short...".

With young children, I had long ago decided that going back to work fulltime (or even part time) was just impossible. With the costs of day-care and travelling, parking, etc, as well as the loss of time for house keeping and other family tasks, going back to a rigid working life was just too much to take on. Not to mention, I also wanted to finish my degree before I went back to work because I have done 'mum + worker + student' before and it was insanely difficult! And I only had ONE child then!! 

BUT even though I made the choice to stay home with my kiddos, the cost of living kept rising, their needs kept changing, and things increased in both time and cost demand. But MY time, finances and working capacity didn't increase! They seemed to DECREASE. I needed to find a way to lighten the load. I could hire a cleaner to create more time? But that needed more money... I could go back to work to create more money? But my job cost both money and time - it would never work... While I was thinking through all of this, I kept thinking of all the other people out there struggling with the multitude of tasks that need doing but having something standing in the way: kids, work, time, physical disability, finances, mental disabilities (sometimes just making a phone call can take some people days to work up to)! I thought of these people and I thought of me, and I thought, why isn't there a service where I can hire someone cheaply to do the little bits I need done to give me more time! Or why isn't there a job I can do where I can just earn a bit of extra money when I need it without the extra strings or pressure of doing more...

So this idea came up: What if I could be my own boss, and work in the sporadic windows of time that all my children go to school and day-care, or even negotiate to bring them with me? What if my business model was to help people who were also struggling... what if I could solve many people's problems while trying to solve my own... What if I could start that small business and earn a little bit of extra money to keep our life comfortable enough with the ever-rising cost of living, WITHOUT adding to my family costs and stress and WHILE helping someone else? 

And that is how Nat's Odd Jobz was born! Anything unqualified I was (and still am!) willing to try my hand at. I have a diverse set of skills from a very eclectic youth and I am pretty strong and fairly talented at most things (it sounds like a huge boast, but I mean it to be objectively true, I just pick things up easily and have had a really diverse life experience so far).

My target audience is busy families, older clients, less able-bodied people or people who are struggling with mental health. Or-  honestly - people who just don't WANT to do something and have built their life up enough that they can afford to hire someone just because they want to - and good for them!!

The best part was - and is - because I'm not touting professional skills, I'm more affordable than most people offering to do similar jobs. And because I am offering an unskilled-all-rounder service, it's also a one-stop-shop. 

Realistically, we often don't need to hire skilled laborers to do work around the house, but that's what we end up getting because that's all that is available. You don't need to hire a carpenter to build a flat pack. But most of the services available are carpenters, and they charge what they think they are worth in their trade - which they are! They did the time learning the craft. But you don't NEED that level of skill for a simple Kmart flat-pack. If you can hire someone less qualified, for less money, to do the same job - or, in fact, several of them... why wouldn't you?

So... Welcome to Nat's Odd Jobz! I hope it is everything I dreamed it would be, and everything you need!
