Welcome to my personal website!

I am an Associate Professor of Economics  at Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

My reserach interests are political economy, applied microeconomics, and economic history. I study the formation of human capital, determinants of technology diffusion, and sources of institutional divergence across space and time.  Most of my research focuses on Eastern Europe as a laboratory of economies developing through technology adoption and often-late institutional reforms. In particular, I am interested in institutions, such as serfdom or peasant commune, which constrain entrepreneurial activity and innovation. How do these growth-inhibiting institutions emerge? Why do they persist despite their apparent inefficiency and what causes their eventual demise? Making progress on these questions can provide new insights into the political economy of long-run economic growth.

I teach World Economic History and Institutional Economics at Higher School of Economics and at Moscow State University.
