SHORT HISTORY:
Predecessor state of Mathura, was founded about 900AD by Raja Brahm Pal. He is considered to be the Head of the Jadon clan of Rajputs who claim descent from Lord Krishna. In token of this claim, all members of the family bear the appellation of Pal, protectors of cows. The Jadon Rajputs initially occupied the fort of Bijaigarh, built by the Pundir Rajputs, and in the 11th century Raja Bijni Pal, established himself in Bayana, and built the fort overlooking the town. His eldest son, built the fort of Timangarh or Tahangarh in around 1085 and shortly afterwards possessed himself of almost all of the country now comprising the Karauli State, as well as a good deal of land to the east as far as Dholpur. In 1196, Muhammed Gauri occupied Bayana and Tahangarh and when the whole of Jadon lands fell to the invaders, the Raja fled to Rewah. His descendant, Raja Arjun Pal, started to recover his ancestral lands in 1327 and by 1348 he recovered all the lands and founded the present capital of Karauli Town. About a hundred years lated Mahmud I of Malwa, captured Karauli and entrusted it to his son, then the Mughals from the time of Emperor Akbar had considerable influence in Karauli, until Mughal power declined and the Marathas subjugated the state exacting tribute until 1817, when a treaty was made with the British. The Jadon Rajputs are considered to be one of the 36 Royal Rajput clans.
