PREDECESSORS AND STATE HISTORY: Predecessor state was founded in circa 700 A.D., later Raja Dholan Deo Tonwar (Tomar) founded Dholpur in 1004, his dynasty ruling till 1505 (his descendants established various Thikanas including Thakurayat of Musepur, Kayasthapada), when it was merged with Gohad state existing as such till 1806 when Rana Khirat Singh of Gohad (1803/1805), became the first ruler of Dholpur. The family colour was azure, but in an encounter towards the end of the 18th century, the then Chief captured from the Thakurs of Bamraoli a golden-yellow flag, with a figure of Hanuman (the monkey-god) in the centre of the field, and this has been subsequently adopted as the family cognisance. Maharaj Rana KHIRAT SINGH, 1st Maharaj Rana of Dholpur 1806/1836, received Dholpur, Bari, Rajakhera and the taluka of Sri Muttra in exchange for Gohad, which was made over to the Maharaja of Gwalior in 1806, first Jat ruler of Dholpur, married and had issue. He died 21st April 1836 (Baisakh sudi 5, 1892).

Maharaj Rana POHAP SINGH, 2nd Maharaj Rana of Dholpur in 1836 (for eight months), died sp in December 1836.
Maharaj Rana BHAGWANT SINGH, 3rd Maharaj Rana of Dholpur 1836/1873, K.C.S.I., G.C.S.I. [cr.1869], born 1824, rendered valuable service to the British authorities during the 1857 war of independence, and was created a Knight Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, married a daughter of the Jat chieftain, Nand Kishor Rajauria, and had adoptive issue. He died sp on 9th February 1873.
(A) Kunwar Kulendra Singh, born as Maharaj Singh, adopted by the Rana as his successor, married Kunwarani Basant Kaur, daughter of Maharaja Narendra Singh of Patiala, and had issue. He died vp before 1873, aged 28 years.

HH Rais ud-Daulah Sipahdar ul-Mulk Maharajadhiraj Sri Sawai Maharaj Rana NIHAL SINGH Lokindra Bahadur Diler Jung Jai Deo, 4th Maharaj Rana of Dholpur 1873/1901, born 4th May 1863, succeeded 9th February 1873 (#1), granted full ruling rights in 1884, educated privately by his mother, learning English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Persian; Honourary Major in the Central India Horse, and received the C.B.E. and Frontier Medal for services in the Tirah campaign; attended the Prince of Wales Darbar in Delhi in 1876; an enlightened ruler, he constructed hospitals, roads and railway; married 30th April 1879, HH Maharani Harbans Kaur, the second daughter of Shahzada Bahadur Shah Dev Singh of Pandriganeshpur in Lahore, and had issue. He died 28th July 1901.

HH Rais ud-Daulah Sipahdar ul-Mulk Maharajadhiraj Sri Sawai Maharaj Rana RAM SINGH Lokindra Bahadur Diller Jang Jai Deo, 5th Maharaj Rana of Dholpur 1901/1911, born 26th May 1883, granted full ruling rights in March 1905, educated at Mayo College, Ajmer; later joined the Imperial Cadet Corps; married HH Maharani Ripudaman Kaur, daughter of HH Raja Sir Hira Singh Malvinder Bahadur, Maharaja of Nabha, and had issue. He died 2nd April 1911.
Kunwar Devender Singh, he left Dholpur before attaining his majority and adopted the life of an ordinary individual in Badrinath.

[cr.1931], K.C.S.I. [cr.1918], K.C.V.O. [cr.1922], granted full ruling rights on 9th October 1913, educated at Mayo College, Ajmer and the Imperial Cadet Corps at Dehra Dun; Honorary Colonel of 1/143rd Narsingh (Dholpur) Infantry, enjoys a personal gun salute of 17, married 1911, HH Maharani Malvender Kaur, sister of the Rais of Badrukhan in Jind, and had issue. He died 22nd October 1954.
