After the Mughal Empire's collapse, the Belha Nawabs declared themselves independent and fought alongside the Peshwa rulers of Poona against the British in the early 19th century, but they lost and paid the price, being reduced in status to that of an estate. Rulers were...

Nawab MIR USMAN ALAM KHAN Bahadur, Nawab of Surat and Belha (see above)
There are three branches of Surat royal family: The Nawab of Belha branch is the senior-most, and the junior branch of the Nawab of Surat’s family now settled in the UK and the US. The third branch and its members are direct descendants of the male heirs of Nawab Mir Jaffur Alee Khan Bahadur of Surat. He was the son-in-law of the last Nawab of Surat, Mir Afzaluddin, and fought in British Parliament for his succession. His descendants from his son Mir Zulfikar Ali are known as the Darbars of Kamadhia and scions of the Nawabs of Surat.
With the death of the last powerful Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, in 1707, the hold of Delhi began to weaken all over India, and in Surat, the local nawab Tegbeg Khan declared himself the city's autonomous ruler. His position was weak, however, and the British conquered Surat in 1759.
