About the Webinar

In this pandemic situation, “Hindi Chini bhai bhai”-the fictional tale of two brothers has again turned into enmity and became a burning issue. From historical perspectives, in the ancient period, India and China had a wonderful bilateral relation where Buddhism was the main catalyst. Great king Ashoka took an essential role to spread Buddhism by sending monks in Tibet and China to extend the teachings of Lord Buddha. The truth and non-violence are the two important pillars of the Buddhism where establishment of the peace was the desired goal. At the same time, Chinese pilgrims played a significant role in the exchanges of knowledge, culture, and philosophy between India and China. These steps undoubtedly played an important role to extend cross-cultural exchanges that had a profound impact on Asian and world history. This rich bilateral historical relation has been continued even up to the medieval period.

In 1914, the India-China border dispute was settled by the Simla Convention between British India and Tibet. Till India argues to maintain that the McMahon Line as the authorized border, while China has never accepted that border, stating that Tibet was never independent. The People’s Republic of China was established on 1st October 1949. On April 1, 1950, India and China established their diplomatic relations and India was the first non-communist country to establish an embassy in China. However, in 1962 the Indo-China Border Clash led to a major backlash in bilateral relations. There was again a short border clash in 1967 in the region of Sikkim, in which Indian forces pushed back the Chinese forces; no further military deaths happened until 2020.

On 1st April 2020, India and China marked the 70 years of the establishment of India-China diplomatic relations. Unfortunately, the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations has been celebrated by the brutal border clash in the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Galwan Valley in exchange for the death of 20 Indian soldiers; though, China did not confirm the number of casualties.

However, this is not only limited to a bilateral relationship but has had a profound impact on India’s neighborhood and foreign policy. The complex geopolitical and geostrategic situation of both countries shaped a different dimension. China’s unprecedented aggressive bilateral relations with India’s neighbors is another major challenge for the recent Indian foreign policymakers. Recent China’s economic and political aggression with India’s neighbors, like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, and also with present Communist Nepal is seriously taking different dimensions.

Pakistan’s overgrowing dependency on China is another significant and alarming magnitude of India’s foreign policy. We can’t ignore the present contending geopolitical and geostrategic perspective between India and China. As China has boosted its naval and military bonds with Pakistan and Myanmar in recent years, India has improved its “look east’ policy. This has to extend economic and strategic ties with countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea. Undoubtedly India – China strategic relations are complex characters of Asian politics that need critical analysis and re-consideration. This particular discourse raises some substantial questions: Is it a security dilemma or geostrategic compulsion of the two countries? Do we hope for any possibilities of the peaceful regional coexistence between both? How is it possible to avoid the contending relations between two nuclear countries?

Historically, India and China had a good trade relation since ancient times. Since the beginning of the previous decade, bilateral trade between the two countries recorded massive growth. How far is it competitive or cooperative bilateral trade relations? Is an economic boycott of China feasible for India? How far the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or ‘Make in India’ can reduce the Chinese or any foreign economic dependency in India? The proposed webinar will try to find out the answers to these serious questions.
