The outbreak of Covid-19 leaves an unprecedented impact on every walk of life. Nearly half of the world population is under the grip of Covid-19. The affected countries pursue partial to complete lockdown policy under the direction of WHO to halt the spread of virus, minimise death rate and destruction. India announced complete lockdown in the last week of March which suddenly stopped the wheel of the economy. The months-long complete shut-down policy severely restricted the movement of people and material (except essential items) and the industrial and agricultural production badly hampered. The huge impact will be observed in various sectors like logistics, auto, tourism, metal, electronic goods, MSMEs and the retail business. it is already realised that our economy is on the brink of collapse. According to an estimate by the World Bank, the expected GDP growth rate of India will hover round 1.5 % to 2.8 %, an all-time low in recent time. Although the Central and the State governments announced some relief measures to combat the present crisis, which may not yield any fruitful result in recovering this poor economy. The worst affected in this pandemic are the informal work forces working in different capacities in various sectors, specially migrant workers to other states in search of jobs. Loss of millions of jobs puts these informal workers into an existential crisis. Naturally public policy expects a re-orientation, minimum health facility and guaranteed income for the poor might be on the top priority for the political parties in near future; the political society or the ‘Janata Janardan’ might compel the political institutions to re-write their political agenda in their favour. Development trajectory might experience a paradigm shift. Even a transformation in federal relations might be observed to tide over the crisis.
This One Day National Webinar is an attempt to comprehend the impact of Covid-19 on the probable changes in the political economy of India.
