Second Edition of Purple Star Report by Columbia University
To better understand the landscape around and impact of the Purple Star program, the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC), the initiative’s national advocate, engaged the Center for Public Research and Leadership at Columbia University (CPRL) conducted a study of the Purple Star program across many states. In this report, we summarize the findings of the investigation, assessing the strengths of current initiatives, identifying potential areas of growth, and offering recommendations to guide the improvement of both extant and emergent initiatives.
Understanding ACEs of Military Children: The Impacts of Toxic Stress
The original ACEs study transformed the face of public health by uncovering the lasting effects of early adversity across the lifespan. Since then, we’ve learned much more on the complexities of trauma. By diving deeper into the military family experience and the impacts of toxic stress, we uncover the vital importance of predictable environments and supportive relationships in our communities.
Anchored 4 Life Club
The Anchored 4 Life Club develops leadership skills, enhances life skills, builds confidence, reinforces team building, and offers support to military students and families dealing with a variety of issues.
Engaging Military Families
This breakout session will take you through the development of a support program for military-connected families: supporting military family’s educational needs through development of a Military Family Advisory Council Military Child Taskforce, and community support/partnerships are available to develop a collaborative culture of high expectations for students and staff.
Nurturing STEM in Early Childhood for Military Families
The session will provide an overview of the NURTURES program, engage participants in an example family engagement “at home”, introduce facilitation strategies to help adults engage with and enhance science & engineering learning experiences for children, and end with and explanation of opportunities to bring NURTURES to your teachers or families.
Supporting Our Soldiers High School Club
Supporting Our Soldiers high school club: Best practices in establishing and running a student led support group. This student-led workshop will provide helpful hints and tips in establishing your own military support group. Using our lived experience, we will provide you with thought provoking and actionable steps to help you be successful.
Purple Star Program Implementation and Sustainability
This workshop will look at the non-traditional approach to establishing KY Purple Star Program and ways a non-traditional partner can fill service gaps through marketing, outreach and evaluation support. Work products produced improved through our partnership will be reviewed and discussed and best practices shared.
Gardening and Nurturing Our Military Kids
Learn how community service projects provide opportunities for students to learn essential skills, create positive learning environments, and lead to lifelong connections.
Local Purple Star Schools Partnering with Communities and Businesses for Funding
In our District we started to provide Purple Star Scholarships for our military students who are graduating during the current year. Scholarships are an application process and are open to all of our Purple Star students. We worked hard in getting the community involved during the month of April to make this possible for our families and have created quite a following. Currently, we are able to provide two $1000 scholarships for our military connected students.
