The purpose of highlighting sustainability in economic theory is not to call out the unknowing or ignorant; it is to encourage a new generation of economic thinking. John Stuart Mill, the pioneer of the concept of the stationary state, explained that this is where profits can no longer be extracted due to the decline in population income and expenditure power. It is the concept that the many few in positions of unwavering greed will continue to exploit without consideration for the future.
It is seemingly so intuitive that the start of economics began when God blessed mankind with commodities, yet economics has spiraled out of control and into territory signaling the precipice of the stationary state. We all have a duty to remember that everything must come out of something. If we remove the materialistic items, we are left with what we need to physically survive: food, water, and shelter.
