My Research
After attending Yale Divinity School and assisting John Pittard in his work on disagreement, I fell in love with philosophical questions that concern both disagreement specifically and interrelationships between people more generally. After Yale, I came to The Ohio State University and studied under Declan Smithies, Tristram McPherson, Christopher Pincock and Elijah Chudnoff (University of Miami) to do dissertation work on rational intuition. Rational intuition is when a proposition strikes you as true when you simply reflect on it. Most philosophers throughout history thought that such intuitions cannot be wrong, and I followed them in my dissertation in defending this classical view.
All that said, my aim has been to not only show that the classical view is tenable but to ultimately show that the classical view can make sense of how we should intuitively respond to cases of peer disagreement and political polarization. Moreover, my work opens the door for how the development of character (i.e., one's intellectual and moral virtue) can help clarify our intuitions when supplemented by reflection with others who challenge us. I have also done some work in ethics and philosophy of religion on the grounds of so-called relational normativity. Relational normativity concerns duties that we owe to specific individuals whom we can wrong when we perform (or fail to perform) certain actions. This fits my broader research program which is to explore how the relational aspect of human nature and life can clarify fundamental questions in ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of religion.
