Learning about sustainable adoption of green agricultural technologies: Experimental evidence from training with organic farming practices and soil tests in Indonesia
This project uses an experimental design to evaluate the longer-term impact of organic farming training in Indonesia on the adoption of sustainable farming practices and chemical input use. Building on the IndOrganic project (see below), it adds a second training wave and a fourth round of data collection, creating a unique four-wave panel of 1,200 smallholders surveyed in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023. The new training deepens farmers' knowledge of organic practices and is complemented by soil testing. We further collect rich qualitative data.

This project investigates how simple, low-cost soil tests can be introduced in rural Indonesia to improve soils, prevent erosion, and protect groundwater. Using a large randomized field experiment with about 1,200 farmers across 60 villages, the project generates evidence on the effectiveness of soil testing under real-life conditions. A complementary willingness-to-pay experiment measures how much farmers value the information provided by soil tests.

IndORGANIC analyses the current state and long-term potential of organic farming to improve food sustainability in Indonesia. The project takes an inter- and transdisciplinary approach, examining organic farming as an alternative to conventional agriculture from anthropological, social, and economic perspectives. At its core is a randomized controlled trial with 1,200 smallholder farmers in Java, designed to evaluate the impact of organic farming training on adoption and farming practices.
