Two women, mother and daughter, were killed last night in a head-on crash. Two children were injured in the accident.
Dead are Mrs. Sadie Putnam, 74, and Mrs. Hallie Putnam Collins, 41, both of 1402 East Twenty-first Street. Mrs. Collins was director of the stenographic bureau at Mills College and secretarial instructor.
Mrs. Collins was driving the car in which she and her mother with killed. With them were Mrs. Collins's daughters, Natalie, 8 and Eloise, 9. They were southbound when the other car, driven by Archie H. Casey, 22, a steelworker, came out of an orchard and turned onto the highway. The cars hit head-on.
Natalie Collins escaped with abrasions of the face. Eloise suffered fractures of both legs. They are at Fairmont Hospital.
Casey is in critical condition with a possible skull fracture and other injuries. Paul Casey, a cousin of the driver, said, "we've been drinking and working for a week." Further investigation is to be conducted.
Mrs. Collins, a divorcee, had been at Mills College since 1942. She was driving her mother and the children to an outdoor theater when the accident happened.
I have loved you every day of my life. Thank you for giving me life. I adored being your baby daughter. I remember how smart and kind you were. Thank you for bestowing me with those qualities that have carried on to your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Your sudden death never made sense to me. I have always been searching for you... One day, we will be reunited and you will hold me in your arms again.
As a child of a teacher, Natalie had more contact with the faculty than a "regular" student would... Nancy Junge
