"Patrón de Muerte (Pattern of Death)" 2024

This piece is a commentary on how woman in the Hispanic culture are affected by the expectations placed upon them by their environment. It displays a jail made out of colorful glass beads with an orchid inside it placed in a jar with no water. These beads are colorful to show how the woman standards in the culture are comfortable and familiar to the woman. The orchid sits inside the jail deprived of water to represent how settling for what the culture wants them to be inevitably kills their individuality.

This video shows the process of the death of the orchid. It represents the demise of individuality of woman that follow the expectations of the Hispanic culture blindly. The video repeats to show how this action is a pattern that is passed down from generation to generation.

Like the video this book also shows the process of the orchid's death. I chose to percent this process in book form because the piece was inspired by the stories of the women in my life. It is made out of homemade paper to signify that the expectations talked about through the work are made up by people in the culture. Each image is a transfer and the images get more distorted as the book goes on to further signify the erasing of individuality. This book is the story of the woman in my culture.

"people of mine" 2024

This piece is a reflection of how I view the people I'm closest to. It displays twelve circles partly covered by a mesh fabric. Each circle represents a person in my life; the colors and designs on the circles are in relation to each person's personality. The orange mesh represents my point of view; it overlaps a part of each circle which alters the perceptions of their colors and patterns. This overlap shows how I have a specific interpretation of each person in my life due to by biases and opinions which contrasts to the way they see themselves.
