A detailed account of how I completed my Gold Award:
I began to research online and speak with my advisors (my Girl Scout Troop leader, my parents, and Howard University) about what items would be acceptable to include in my cancer care packages. I spent an entire day online and on the phone.
Over the course of a few days, I wrote letters to and called several local hospitals in the area to see which ones would accept care packages and which ones would be willing to work with me. I finally settled on Howard University Hospital.
I spoke with my contact at Howard University Hospital's Cancer Center. We discussed acceptable items and what would be helpful to the patients.
I launched a GiveCampus fundraising campaign. I scripted and filmed a video regarding my project, and then I shared my campaign donation link with family and friends.
I scoured Amazon for the best and reasonably priced products for my care packages. I read reviews and compared items. It took a few days and I had to wait for some items to be restocked, but I got it done eventually!
The packages with my items arrived and I went through everything and made sure it was in order. I also began to make calls and to set up a date to go to Howard University Hospital and make the delivery. I also had to find volunteers and a ride.
I spent a few hours with my volunteers briefing them on my project and detailing what I needed help with. I needed help with getting the many heavy boxes out of my dorm room, getting them to Howard U. Hospital's Cancer Center, and taking pictures.
We spent the morning loading the packages into the truck. When we arrived at the hospital, we unloaded the packages and spoke with the director. We took a tour of the cancer center, took pictures, and discussed the next steps.
I then created this website for my gold award project to display my project and to make it sustainable, so that other girls can follow in my footsteps or do a project similar to mine.
