Nasrin Ali's Gold Award Project
Care packages for cancer provided homemade care packages for cancer patients at Howard University Hospitals Cancer Center to address the issue of the lack of emotional/physical support for cancer patients (beyond the usual family/friends visiting) that I have noticed in the hospital. The patients often suffer from a lack of funds and the hospital does everything it can to help their patients, but they could always use something extra. Howard Hospital does not receive near as much as hospitals such as John Hopkins does in donations (monetary and in products), which I don't think is right. Howard Hospital caters to a very underserved community in multiple ways. If someone does not initially qualify for insurance, they automatically become eligible if they are being treated for cancer at Howard U.'s Cancer Center. The staff at the cancer center are very pleasant and caring, and they do everything they can to make the experience free of hardships. The Cancer Center knows how much of a hardship cancer is, and they do little things to alleviate that. They provide gift cards for the metro, as well as gas vouchers, With the amount of work they do for their patients, there is not always enough left over for simple luxuries, such as blankets, lotion, and lip care products. That's where I come in! I don't want the patients or the hospital to spend any more money than they have to, so I provided 50 care packages to the Cancer Center to address the issue. Anything I thought would provide at least a little comfort to the patients, I included in the care packages.
