Foundations
In art, while freedom of creative expression is at the forefront of art's purpose, I personally believe in adding in strong foundational skills into the mix, in a 50/50 balance. Once we know the basics, and know them well, we can utilize them to make the best work possible. Yet, we can also start to destruct them, to push the boundaries of what we all know to be "true."
Student Choice
Students should always have choice in the work they create. After all, isn't that the point of artisitc expression? Whether it be modifications to materials, techniques, source inspiration, etc., students should have choice in the education they are receiving. I believe in creating the space in which they can all voice those desires, and one that those wants and needs can be acted upon.
Community
Art fuels commmunity, and community fuels art. I believe in fostering a caring, safe, uplifting artistic community for my students to thrive within. I believe in leading by example, stressing the importance of teamwork, and disucssing what community has done for us, what we do for our communities, and how we can all continue to improve and uplift our communities, in and outside of the classroom. Creatives need each other, and I aim to help forge those lasting bonds to push the artists in us forward.Â
