We conducted subjective and behavioral tests of the relationship. The subjective method was Inclusion of Other in the Self scale (IOS) [2], which can measure how close a person feels to another person. The behavioral method was Ultimatum Game [3], which is the game of money distribution. In the game, players can tolerate an unfair situation where the other person is given more money when the players feel the other person close.
Subjective test
Participants were asked to select one figure among seven figures in the below picture. 栗原さん is the fake name of the experimenter and あなた is you in Japanese. The more the two circles overwrap, the participants feel the experimenter close.
Behavioral test
At the beginning of Ultimatum Game, participants receive an offer of 500 yen distributed between the participants (あなた) and the experimenter, with a fake name 栗原さん. They can select accept (受け取る) or reject (拒否する) the offer. When they accept the offer, both the participants and the experimenter received the distributed money. However, when they reject, neither receive any money. People accept more unfair offers such as the below image when they feel the other player close.
