In current online communication, visual information through videos and auditory information through sound are primarily conveyed. Touch, such as hugs and handshakes, also play an important role in communication. Integrating tactile information into online communication could enhance the communication experience.
Since the heart rate changes depending on the emotional state, information about the emotional state of the other person can be obtained by sensing the heartbeat. This device was used in the workshop called "Heartbeat Picnic" and developed by Junji Watanabe of NTT Communication Science Laboratories. Through this device, the participants felt their own and others' heartbeats as vibrations. Using this device during online communication has the potential to influence the relationship between callers.
It was revealed that people feel more intimate with the caller when they feel the other person's heartbeat through tactile sensation during a video call. Touching heartbeat can be a new online communication.
