A paint job can protect your steel railings from corrosion. And you can easily do the job on your own. You can use water-based paint instead of an oil-based product.
Aluminum and stainless steel don’t rust or corrode hence suitable for making railings, stair banisters, and window frames. But using only these two materials for construction will be limiting your choice. On the other hand, metal paint can allow you the freedom to choose the construction material.
There is little need to worry about a paint job as now you don’t have to use that old oil-based material that oozes a strong odor and toxic substances. The thick oil-based material has become a thing of the past as you have water-based paint that does a better job without making you wear a gas mask while painting your railings and other structures.
Advantages of using a water-based paint
1. Safe
Paints emit harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the form of gasses and for this reason, one has to cover his face to prevent inhaling VOC while doing a painting job. The government has set norms for VOC emission in paints to ensure the safety of painters. You should use water-based prints that follow the zero VOC policy. It is the best rust protector on the market.
2. Ease of use
Water-based paint is more convenient to use than its oil-based counterpart. A water-based product is thinner and hence needs no extra fluid. You can simply dip your brush in a container, draw the color, and apply it to iron railings, steel banisters, and aluminum window frames. It will set decently on the metallic surface.
3. Reduce wastage
Thick oil-based paint requires a thinner for painting. Also, it needs specific liquids for cleaning the spills. The thickness adds weight to the product and it becomes difficult to hold on to a brush. You dip a brush on an oil-based color, take the brush out but allow the excess color to dip in the container, and apply the color left on the brush on metallic pieces. But the color slips from the metallic surface due to weight. But there is no such hassle with water-based metal paint.
4. Quick drying
Think oil-based color takes a long time to dry but its water-based counterpart needs little time in drying. The quick drying time allows you to start using the metallic surface soon after painting. Also, there is little to worry about spoiling your hands or the recently painted metallic surfaces, if you are using water-based paint. You can paint the metallic parts of your home on your own.
