Associate Professor ChM. Dr. Lee Hooi Ling, CChem, MRSC, FMIC

Associate Professor ChM Dr Lee Hooi Ling (李惠琳) is an academic staff at the School of Chemical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia since 2012. She graduated with a PhD (Surface Science) degree, which was awarded by Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland under a full scholarship from the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) grant. Her current research interest includes Nanotechnology, Green Chemistry, Surface Science and Chemical Security Education. She has published in more than 50 publications with a Scopus h-index of 17 and is awarded multiple universities, national and international grants.

Dr. Lee is awarded the 2021-2022 US Fulbright-ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program in 2021. She was one of the recipients of the 2018 Endeavour Research Fellowship. She was also featured as one of the 80 recipients of the 2020 Cohort of Women Leaders in Southeast Asia Women from 10 countries across 16 industries. This recognition is an initiative by the Young Southeast Asia Leader's Initiative (YSEALI) Women's Leadership Academy Alumni Network and backed by the U.S. Mission to ASEAN and Wedu, a non-profit women's leadership organization based in Bangkok, Thailand. 

On a professional level, Dr. Lee is very involved as a founding member and was the first female Chair of the ACS Malaysia Chapter (2018-2020) as well as a co-advisor for the USM ACS Student Chapter. At present, she is the Past Chair for the ACS Malaysia Chapter. She is also appointed as a Member of the Committee on International Activities, a joint committee of the Council and Board of Directors since 2022.  Furthermore, she was selected to attend a highly competitive ACS-organised and U.S. State Department-funded programme for early-career ASEAN scientists. She has been awarded travel grants by chemical-related organizations, representing Malaysia in meetings and summits including the recent ASEAN-India Collaborative Reseach Grant. She is a Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Besides, she is also a Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM). She joined Young Scientists Network-Akademi Sains Malaysia (YSN-ASM) as an Honorary Member. In addition to that, she is also a Senior Contributor of the Public Outreach Working Group in the International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN).

Dr. Lee is a strong advocate for women in science. She is actively involved IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast programme and has been on the organising committee from 2020-present. As such, she hopes her experience as a female scientist and educator will inspire her past and present female students in pursuing their dreams and passion, especially in science-related careers.
