BISCAYNE BAY WATER QUALITY PROJECT

GOAL: COLLABORATE, OBTAIN DATA, ANALYZE THAT DATA OF BISCAYNE BAY FOR THE PROTECTION OF OUR NATURAL RESOURCES, EDUCATE STUDENTS AS WELL AS THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BAY, MAINTAINING THE HEALTH OF THE BAY, AND HOW THESE EFFORTS ARE REALIZED

FIELD COLLECTION OF WATER IN THE BAY

Water is collected at three depths: Bottom, Middle and Surface

Tested for : O2 saturation, Conductivity, Temp, PH, visibility

Tests on the field are done by YSI instruments and Other Specific instrument (Pens)

All tests are redone in the MDC Homestead Water Quality Lab,

along with other tests that can only be performed in a laboratory environment, such as bacterial growth.

Professors Mark Chiappone and Luis Labiste from MDC Homestead Water Quality Lab are working on this project, alongside undergraduate students learning how to create and launch research work.

They are also collaborating with Miami Dade County DERM EEL and Biscayne Bay Task force (Ms. Janet Gil Director of EEL DERM and Dr. Pamela Sweeny Lead Scientist), which was created directly by the Mayor of Miami Dade County Daniella Levine Cava and her administration.
