The weekend hobby of building and drifting cars grew rapidly as Paul immersed himself in Canada’s racing world. As his career grew traction, Paul decided to leave behind his formal education with a degree in Architecture. He quit his construction management job of 4 years  and launched the first start-up that would later turn to be the internationally recognized brand, Grassroots Performance. Paul’s path to success as a racer and an entrepreneur is quite unconventional. While racing for the Canadian drifting series, the Canadian Sport Compact Series (CSCS) and the Formula Drift Canada, Paul was constantly tuning and customizing his race cars. Moving on from the Nissan Silvia to a better Chassis, he began building the Grassroots’ “Mona Lisa” Nissan 350Z in 2014; a car that would eventually be the catalogue for Grassroots, and the car his team would bring to various tours across USA and Canada. 

Instead of constantly changing stock and after-market parts into the race car, Paul decided to develop and use his own concepts. Hundreds of overseas Skype phone calls, many failed track days, and long frustrating hours spent in the garage, the inception of Grassroots had started to form. Paul had found tremendous success on the track after succesfully swapping a turbocharged American Corvette engine into his Japanese Nissan 350Z race car. Reaching powers of over 700 hp consistently while using his own cooling systems, Grassroots had finally emerged to demonstrate its excellence. 

In 2016 Paul decided that racing is not enough. His passion for Japanese vehicles ran strong through his entire life. He knew there was more to achieve. Thus, the birth of NAKAMA IMPORTS. In November of 2016,  Paul and wife (who is of Japanese descent) traveled to japan in search of an automotive adventure. Through the connections he's made from Grassroots Performance, and the support and guidance of Japanese relatives. - Paul was able to arrange an auction house visit in Nagoya. This would be the first time Paul purchases and imports a car from Japan to Canada. Since 2016 Paul has continued to import various types of vehicles for both customer Special request, and as well  for his own company inventory for resale purposes. Since 2016 Paul has successfully imported and sold over 60 JDM classic vehicles.
